It’s so rewarding to design a space that is truly timeless. This classic English kitchen remodel was so exciting to design. The space already had beautiful original features that with our help were able to shine and give our client exactly the space they wanted: a kitchen that honored the home’s character while updating it to make it more functional and catered to their needs.
The gorgeous original windows first made us fall in love with this space. The dark stained cabinets, brown tones, and dim lighting needed to be completely redesigned to allow the space to truly use all the windows offered. We were eager to design a way to show them off and use them to get the most natural light and brightness into the space. One way we chose to do this was by putting the tile backsplash all the way to the ceiling surrounding the windows, framing the windows to maximize the light they brought in. We love how it looks, and what it achieves for the feel of the whole space.
Custom built shaker style cabinets in a creamy white, white subway Bedrosian tiles for the backsplash, and white quartz countertops made the whole space feel much more open, cohesive, and yes, so much brighter! The open shelving adds an interesting detail to the space, allowing for unique storage and bringing in another warm wood tone. These spoke to the classic English kitchen feel but with a unique personality for the space and our client.
Using unlacquered brass pulls and knobs, brass sconces, and stunning black and white checkered flooring, gave just the right amount of moodiness to the space without pushing it towards being dark. We also love that we left the stunning original door untouched as we felt it fit well with the style of the cabinets and some of the other wood tones we used in the space. In fact, these touches enhanced the room’s overall lightness and brightness in their subtle contrasts. The checkered flooring is especially a favorite choice for its classic look.
When we work with our clients, we love to talk about their particular desires for their space and come up with creative ways to make those happen in our designs. For this project, our client wanted a space in the kitchen to sit, so we were able to suggest a spot for a stool and small lamp to give just the right coziness to look over a recipe, check email, or enjoy a cup of tea while waiting for dinner to be done. This was certainly one of our favorite features of this space – practical and lovely.
This kitchen remodel was such a great mix of building on the charm and character of our client’s older home and putting it together with modern touches, giving the space appealing functionality and timelessness.
