Greetings from quarantine life in the Midwest. I hope you all got a chance to read Kirsten’s last post about adjusting to a new “normal”. It was so helpful and really hit the nail on the head. All of us are adjusting to some type of new “normal” and it’s okay to admit that it is hard. It is certainly hard for me.
Today I thought I would briefly share a few tips we follow when choosing a rug size for a bedroom. Kirsten and I are both huge fans of area rugs. They bring color, warmth, texture, and comfort to a space. They can also really ground an area/space. We love using them over hardwoods, but we’re also in favor of using them over carpet as well. These tips are meant to be helpful and informative, so don’t feel bad if you have a rug in your bedroom that does not “follow” the rules.
Bedrooms are a great place to add an area rug. Especially if you have hardwoods in your bedroom. It’s so nice to step down on to something warm and soft when your feet hit the floor in the morning.
When choosing a rug size for your bedroom, you first have to consider the size of your bed. This will be a big determining factor for the rug size. If you reference the photo above you will see that they have the rug about ⅔ (or slightly more) up under the bed. They chose to leave the night stands off of the rug. This is my top choice for rug placement under the bed. It also has a fair amount on the sides to step onto.
You also want to make sure the bed is centered on the rug. Without centering the bed, the room will feel very off balanced. Try and have your nightstands around 8-12″ away from the rug. Also, make sure to have at least 18″ of rug extending from the end of the bed.
A good rule of thumb to remember; typically an 8×10 rug works well for a queen size bed, while a 9×12 rug works well for a king size bed.
One last tip to consider. Maybe you have a tight space in your bedroom and an area rug just won’t work. In this case consider a runner. Check out this space by House Seven Design
They have a beautiful vintage runner placed next to the side of the bed. This is a great option for tight spaces that don’t have room for a full size rug, or a budget friendly option.
