Welcoming the seasons into your home can involve more than adding different decor.
When I was listening to the Next Right Thing Podcast Episode with The Nester, they talked about welcoming the seasons by using all of your senses. I LOVED that idea.
In this blog post I’m going to be share how we can welcome the season of fall into our homes by using our 5 senses. Thanks for the inspiration Emily & Myquillyn!
First…
Before we start adding things, we must take away. Look around your house and put away or get rid of things that remind you of summer. For example: beach towels, flowery candles, bright faux greenery, magazines from the summer months, etc.
Once you declutter/get rid of items from the past season, you can start to welcome the new season by using all 5 senses.
Sense of Smell
Do you ever walk into a room, get a whiff of a certain smell and it brings you back to a specific memory? What scents remind you of fall? Pumpkin, Apple Cinder, Cinnamon?
Lighting a fall candle or diffusing a fall blend can start to create those fall scent memories for you!
The bloggers at “Chris Loves Julia” did an amazing job describing 21 different candles. Check it out here if you’re in need of a new fall candle!
Sense of Sight
What you see can also remind you of the seasons. Think about when you’re driving down the road- what do the trees look like? The foliage on the side of the road? Those are all clues about how you can decorate or what you can bring into your home.
Sarah, creator of the Room For Tuesday, walked through how she decorated her front porch for fall. I love how she used mums and pumpkins. You don’t need to over do it!
Remember when I talked about what you see outside during the season? Those are great clues about what to use for decor in vases in the home!
I enjoy cutting stems from bushes and trees in my yard, but I also buy faux stems that I can use year after year. Molly & I always recommend buying faux stems that look as real as possible. Don’t waste your money on the fake looking stuff!
Sense of Sound
I’ve found that in different seasons I listen to different types of music.
As fall approaches, the music I play has a chill vibe. Below is a snippet of a fall playlist I created to play in the background at home.
I’d encourage you to do the same! Create a playlist that has songs that remind you of fall; it doesn’t have to be the same as mine. 😉
Sense of Taste
Pumpkin and apple flavored treats scream fall to me! It can be as simple as having a bowl of apples out on the counter or making pumpkin muffins for a snack.
What ever is “in season”, put it out or use more of it. You’ll notice you’ll start connecting certain foods with specific seasons.
Sense of Touch
A few fall colored pillows and cozy throw blankets can give you a feel of fall.
Having blankets out for cool fall mornings is a great way to activate that sense of touch for the fall season.
Now imagine sitting in your living room with a fall candle burning, wrapped in a cozy throw blanket, drinking hot apple cider, listening to your fall playlist, admiring the fall colors outside and inside your home.
Doesn’t that sound like Autumn to you?! However you decide to embrace this season, I hope you take time to slow down to enjoy it!
