Our clients were so excited to remodel their home and give it some lightness and brightness that fit their style – they had aspirations to make their mudroom, kitchen, dining, and living room flow seamlessly but weren’t sure how to execute it. So, we set to work to give them the beautiful, unified space they wanted!
The home had a lot of dated, dark brown stained oak and yellow toned colors that did not allow the space’s natural light to do its work. Our clients expressed an interest in wanting a fresh and updated look that functioned better for their family; we loved helping them hone in on a style they loved and helped their vision come to life in the perfect space for their family.
The mudroom was just off the garage and was the family’s primary landing space when returning home. Even though the mudroom had some storage, it was not easy to organize nor did it fit the style they were wanting. Dark paneling, flooring, and doors made the space feel smaller than it was as well.
We worked with a contractor and cabinet maker to design a more efficient and modern locker storage space – with room above and below for more organizational storage. We added seating to make the transition of coming and going even easier for the family. Sleek and modern style hooks on the wall provide even more spots to store items and stay organized. Fresh, bright paint contrasted nicely against the dark natural wood bench. The darker slate like tile gives the space just the right amount of color and interest. We even removed a wall to add more room and let in more light. Such a lovely improvement!
The kitchen presented some challenges to the family in its lack of storage, poor lighting, and lack of flow caused by jutted out walls and misplaced kitchen appliances. We were eager to eliminate all of these issues and give the space a bright, beautiful design that met the practical needs of the family.
The kitchen cabinets and mudroom cabinets were the same shaker style to keep a unified look and feel to the home. Our clients wanted colored cabinets and loved the look of the soft green color we chose; it makes the space feel so serene and calm. We chose a textured Bedrosian tile backsplash that added to the space’s soft feel already established by the soft green cabinet color and the light, bright quartz countertop. These features contrasted perfectly with the black pulls. Having the bulkhead removed allowed the cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling which made the galley kitchen feel bigger and added much needed storage space. We moved appliances to different locations helping improve ease of movement and adding more countertop workspace – who doesn’t need that?!?! We were even able to add in a much needed walk-in pantry space at the end of the galley kitchen. The whole space opened up with these color and layout improvements! We chose durable and beautiful Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring for the kitchen, dining, and living room bringing the whole area together.
One of our favorite changes was removing the awning above the kitchen sink – this allowed more natural light to come in and gave us the chance to install the backsplash tile all the way to the ceiling, surrounding the window and enhancing the natural light. All of this made the pendant light we selected even more enchanting in this space, too! Besides the tile and lighting details, the addition of the niche behind the stove made the space not only practical for cooking but also using a herringbone pattern with the backsplash here gave it more character and charm. It’s these details that really make a space take on a character all its own.
The view from the dining room looking into the kitchen and through to the mudroom now felt serene, seamless, and so appealing to the eye! And notice how the pantry door blends right into the flow of the space.
We pulled some of the same colors and textures from the mudroom and kitchen into the living space with rugs and a new coffee table. Keeping the same LVP throughout continued to enhance the seamlessness of the space.
This was a large project with many moving parts and spaces – in the end, we are thrilled with how now, the whole space seamlessly and beautifully flows together making it enjoyable to look at from any spot in the house and incredibly practical for this client’s family life. It’s now a timeless and inviting space they’ll truly enjoy.
